A new sports bar featuring sliders, Belgian fries and beers, has taken over the former spot of defunct Criolla Kitchen, at the corner of Market and 16th Street, in the Castro district. The remodel provided a beautiful rustic interior decor, using reclaimed Oregon barn wood. Added a new long bar section, along with 5 large flat screen TVs (tuned to sports) above the bar area, and one flat screen above the bathroom door.
This is the second outpost for SliderBar, whose first location debuted in Downtown Palo Alto, in 2010. Owner Ashwani Dhawan, a former Silicon Valley software startup entrepreneur, calls his sports bar venture a multi-concept, trying to redefine the casual dining experience by combining certain aspects of a beer and wine bar, an American diner, and a high end coffee shop.
Comparing both spots reveals a slight shift in focus, tilting away from a family friendly menu of the original eatery, perhaps to adapt to its new neighborhood of beer loving urban dwellers. The SF menu has doubled up on beers and mini burgers, cut the wine list by more than half, added more alcohol options, and dropped the mini waffles menu.
The signature menu item are 19 different sliders sold individually (at $3.50 to $6 each), in pairs, triples, or by the half dozen. Another great beer pairing are, the Belgian fries and sweet potato fries, with a choice of 12 sauces. Plus chicken wings, milkshakes and floats, a daily soup, and a handful of salads for the health conscious.
The bar features 15 craft beers on tap, with Belgians like Delirium Tremens, to local beers like Anchor Liberty Ale. 4 red and white wines on tap, sangrias, margaritas, and the new addition of 4 creative Beertails (beer cocktails).
And a top of the line La Marzocco espresso machine, brewing Blue Bottle brand coffee, will satisfy the daily dose needs of most caffeine addicts. Open daily 10 am to 10 pm, Fridays and Saturdays until 11 pm.
