Onigilly, a popular food cart that has served at many Off the Grid events along with regular weekly lunchtime service at the Civic Center Farmers’ Market and Justin Herman Plaza, will be opening a restaurant in the Financial District this summer.
Although many of the details are still up in the air, the plan is to open in June 2012 with a more diverse menu for both lunch and dinner.
As they prepare the restaurant for opening, they will close their cart location at Justin Herman Plaza effective Thursday, March 29 but will continue to operate at the Civic Center Farmers’ Market and Off the Grid locations.
Onigilly is one of many incubator projects aided by La Cocina, a San Francisco group that helps to cultivate food entrepreneurs.
Started by Koji Kanematsu in 2006, Onigilly was selected in 2010 as one of the street food businesses officially permitted to vend at San Francisco Park properties. Ever since, they have been serving lunch and dinner to hungry customers craving their wonderful onigiri (Japanese rice balls).
